Between scenes, Ozu frequently uses long transitional shots to establish the next scene's locale. This editing technique is comparable to the Classic Hollywood style, however, Ozu's version is often composed of far more shots and nearly always places with graphic matching and other ideosyncrasies. For example, Ozu loved the color red and sprinkled it over his images for graphic effect.

Note the use of horizontal and vertical shapes, many using graphic matching, in these transitional shots.
